In 2024, CJI marked its 20th anniversary! Twenty years ago, four recent UW Law School graduates saw a need in their community and believed they could be part of the solution, part of the change in the world. These thoughtful and committed individuals set the course for many dedicated individuals after them. Since its inception, CJI has increased access to justice to those underserved in our community, representing thousands of clients. Last year alone, CJI attorneys represented over 400 clients in eviction defense and over 50 victims of crime in matters involving domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. Our dedicated attorneys work tirelessly to meet our clients’ needs and eliminate barriers to justice.

There are many things for CJI and our supporters to be excited about! CJI won the prestigious Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year Award granted by the State Bar of Wisconsin. I was so grateful for the opportunity to accept this award on behalf of our dedicated attorneys and to publicly acknowledge the great work they do every day. We also added a new attorney, Alicia Armstrong and with her, a new immigration practice to CJI! Alicia has over a decade of immigration experience and was co-founder of the Sunshine Legal Clinic. In addition, we welcomed Erin Mason to our Board of Directors. Erin is a former client and currently works for the State Bar of Wisconsin supporting the Consumer Protection Program by providing administrative assistance and accounting support with the goal of ensuring a smooth, efficient, and professional process for attorney and consumer participants. We are thrilled to have such committed individuals on the CJI team!

Even with all of these exciting developments, CJI still needs your help. This year, CJI lost critical funding, impacting many of our current clients and our clients in the future.
